  1. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The purpose of this program is for children to experience researching and preparing recipes with an alphabet slant to it. It is an interdisciplinary program in which students gain insight into preparations of food, shopping for foods, and creating their own unique class cookbook. A-B-C's of COOKING reinforces oral language, written language, alphabetizing. and vocabulary expansion. It encourages sequencing, predicting, problem solving and following directions. Reading, mathematics, nutrition, and computer skills are developed through practical applications. It also gives my E.S.L. students an opportunity to improve their language skills using their 5 senses. Students also learn how to budget, shop, read newspaper ads and develop life skills as well.

  1. DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The students each create their own A-B-C cookbook by being given one or more letters of the alphabet. It is then their job to research through magazines, cookbooks and family members for a recipe beginning with that letter. e.g. A- Apple Streudel, B- Banana Nutcake etc. Each child is then given $ 7.00 a piece to shop for the necessary food. They then make a shopping list, study newspaper ads for prices, shop for the ingredients, follow directions and prepare the recipe at home. The student then serves the dish for the class to enjoy. They then explain how the dish was prepared and write the recipe on the board. The rest of the class copies this into their notebook and goes to the computer room and creates the A-B- C COOKBOOK using all these recipes. These cookbooks can be shared with other classes and their families. Adjustments can be made according to the ages of the students.
